sry been gone a lil while. But anyway it would be detecting Sphere objects. They would be paintballs. They are 68 calliber and filled with a thick milky liquid. they are like plasticy (hard) on the shell. Just curious how to make one. It needs to be able to run off of 1 or 2 9v batteries. And connect to a solenoid. And if it dont sense a ball the solenioid wont shoot. ty

Well, first does the solenoid just turn on once? or is it on until the path is cleared? If it's the first a 555 timer setup as a monostable vibrator would work.

Second, if sensed optically can the sensor/emitter be placed opposite eachother? If yes then I'd probably first experiment with a LDR and transistor opposite an LED. Use IR if visible light is a problem.

Well the solenoid would go off everytime the trigger would be pulled. Which could be up to 20 times a second. So the eye would need to be able to keep up wiht it. The Sensor can be placed where it is opposite. but most made for this purpose is only used on one side.
