The Tindie has recently launched Edgeberry, an open-source platform developed by SpuQ in Belgium for building IoT Edge solutions using a Raspberry Pi. This IoT includes a base board, hardware cartridges, and software to enhance Raspberry Pi’s IoT capabilities. The Edgeberry Base Board connects to the Raspberry Pi’s GPIO header and provides features like a 3A step-down converter, buzzer, bi-colour LED, and an expansion slot for adding Edgeberry Hardware Cartridges. These cartridges expand functionality, such as the Console & CAN Cartridge, which adds CAN-bus and USB interfaces, and the Sense’n’Drive Cartridge, which adds digital outputs and I²C sensor ports. The platform is ideal for both industrial and residential IoT applications.

Its software connects to the Edgeberry Dashboard for remote management of connected devices, though the web interface is still in development. It is fully open-source, with hardware available on Tindie and all designs accessible on GitHub, making it a customizable solution for IoT projects.

Previously, we have written about some more interesting IoTs like the Nuvotron Numicro MA35D1-Base SOM, the Makerfabs ESP32-S3 Based NBIoT/LTE-M, the Object link S3LW Development Board, and much more, feel free to check those out if you are interested in the topic.

Edgeberry Base Board Specifications:

  • SoC: Raspberry Pi (not included)
  • Edgeberry Base Board:
    • 40-pin GPIO connector for interfacing with the Raspberry Pi
    • Expansion slot for connecting Edgeberry Hardware Cartridges
    • Buzzer, bi-color LED, and button for additional control
    • 3A step-down converter for power management
    • 12V DC power jack
  • Edgeberry Hardware Cartridges:
    • Console & CAN Cartridge:
      • CAN-bus interface
      • USB interface
    • Sense’n’Drive Cartridge:
      • 6 digital outputs
      • I²C sensor port
    • Custom hardware cartridge designs supported via KiCad EDA template
  • Power Supply:
    • 3.3V power supplied by Raspberry Pi
    • 5V power supplied by Edgeberry Base Board
  • Software:
    • Edgeberry Device Software for connecting to Edgeberry Dashboard
    • Pre-programmed ID in Base Board’s EEPROM for device management
    • Remote control and tracking via the dashboard (web interface in progress)
  • Enclosure: Optional 3D-printed enclosure available for purchase
  • Licensing:
    • Hardware: CERN OHL-W
    • Software: GNU GPLv3

The Edgeberry platform is priced as follows: the Base Board is available for approximately $47 on Tindie, while the Console & CAN Cartridge costs around $30, and the Sense’n’Drive Cartridge is priced at about $25. Additionally, a 3D-printed enclosure can be purchased separately for around $21, offering a complete solution for Raspberry Pi-based IoT Edge projects.

As far as I understand, the Edgeberry makes your Raspberry Pi even better for controlling stuff in the real world. Its modular design, with the Base Board and different Hardware Cartridges, makes it easy to customize for all kinds of projects. The software connects to the product Dashboard using the pre-programmed ID in the Base Board’s EEPROM, giving you the tools to manage your device without much hassle. More information is available in the project’s hardware and software GitHub repositories.
