In today’s IoT industry, there is an increasing need for faster and more robust microcontrollers to support the demands of complex IoT systems. To meet these demands STMicroelectronics NV which is a major semiconductor designer and manufacturing company has introduced the STDES-WL3x microcontroller designs.

Processor Specs

STDES-WL3x designs can be used to design the module as the users want but at the core of these designs lies the STM32WL3x microcontroller which uses the Arm Cortex-M0 processor. This 32-bit core is capable of operating at speeds of 64 Mhz making it extremely fast. It has an integrated sub-GHZ RF transceiver, making it a highly capable solution for low-power and long-range applications.

The microcontroller supports multiple band frequencies such as 159–185 MHz, 413–479 MHz, and 826–958 MHz for compatibility with regional and application-specific standards. The RF transmitter adds further flexibility by accommodating advanced modulations such as FSK, DSSS, and OOK, which are very important for communication protocols like M-Bus, Mioty, Wize, Sigfox, 6LowPAN, and Wi-SUN HAN.

STDES-WL3x designs fit low-power applications

One of the important features of the STDES-WL3x designs is their emphasis on energy efficiency. It has a voltage supply range of 1.7V to 3.6V and an integrated low-power autonomous wake-up receiver, the designs are specifically designed for battery-powered applications where longevity is crucial. This makes the systems suitable for IoT applications or industry applications where maintenance and power replacements are challenging. The design provides output power ranging from +10 dBm to +27 dBm which makes them versatile for both short and long-range applications. The configurations can be changed according to the user, to aid the changes made by the users the system has integrated passive devices(IPDs) which streamline the RF matching process for selected frequency and power combinations.

STDES-WL3x designs are also easily configurable

The hardware design of the boards is such that the user can configure them in any possible way according to need. Two-layer and four-layer PCB configurations are available which cater to the needs of the users according to their performance needs and cost limitations. For instance, the four-layered PCB design offers improved Rf performance which is critical for high-power applications. The inclusion of pre-configured radio settings ensures that users can configure RF performance without delving into complex configurations making it more user-friendly.

The STDES-WL3x reference designs combine advanced microcontroller features, energy-efficient design, and a comprehensive development environment which helps the users to configure the designs and optimize the performance. It combines microcontroller technology, flexible hardware configurations, and a robust software ecosystem. STMicroelectronics has created a solution that addresses the needs of modern wireless communications. To learn more about the STM32WL3x microcontroller series visit the announcement page.
