Murata Type 2FR/2FP and 2KL/2LL tri-radio IoT module Includes Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, and Optional Thread Support
Murata has recently introduced four new IoT modules the Type 2FR/2FP and Type 2KL/2LL IoT modules with tri-radio connectivity with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, and optional Thread(802.15.4) support, designed for applications in smart homes, industrial automation, and healthcare. The 2FR/2FP modules integrate an NXP RW610 SoC with an Arm Cortex-M33 processor, meaning this module supports standalone operation. Additionally, it has security features like EdgeLock Assurance and Matter protocol support.
The 2KL/2LL modules on the other hand are smaller and simpler, and they rely on external processors to handle primary logic, making them ideal for size-constrained applications. The main difference between the four modules lies in Thread (802.15.4) support – the 2FR and 2KL include Thread connectivity, whereas the 2FP and 2LL do not. Additionally, the 2FR/2FP modules are larger (12.0 x 11.0 x 1.5 mm) and integrate more features for standalone use, while the 2KL/2LL modules are ultra-compact (7.7 x 8.8 x 1.3 mm), with size efficiency over built-in functionality.

previously we have written about various tri-radio IoT modules including the NXP RW612 tri-radio wireless MCU, and the U-Blox MAYA-W2 series module feel free to check those out if you are interested in the topic.
The 2KL/2LL (IW610F/IW610G chipset) and 2FR/2FP (RW610 chipset) modules both support Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, and optional Thread. The compact 2KL/2LL (7.7 x 8.8 x 1.3 mm) relies on an external processor, while the 2FR/2FP integrates a Cortex-M33 processor for standalone operation, advanced security, and Matter protocol support.
In terms of software, the Type 2KL/2LL module comes sports Linux, FreeRTOS, and Android platforms and interfaces with the host through SDIO v3.0 DDR50 for Wi-Fi and UART/PCM for Bluetooth. The Murata Type 2FR/2FP integrates an Arm Cortex-M33 real-time core supported by MCUXpresso and the FreeRTOS platform.
The company also talks about an evolution board, that will be available in Q1 2025, and the product page also mentions that the minimum order quantity will be 2000 pieces for the SoCs. The company did not mention any pricing information, at the time of writing but more information can be found on there documentation section of the product page, and the press release page.
