The Rockchip-RK3588S 8-core 64-bit processor, which includes a quad-core A76 + quad-core A55, is in the heart of the Orange Pi 5B. It is built with 8nm design process which makes it faster, consumes less power, brings superior performance to various AI scenarios, and has up to 2.4GHz base frequency. It has an integrated ARM Mali-G610 MP4 GPU, high-performance 3D and 2D image acceleration modules built in, and an AI accelerator NPU with up to 6 Tops of computing power. It has 16GB (LPDDR4/4x) to meet the requirements of products with ample RAM and 128GB eMMC memory, dual-band Wi-Fi6, BT5.0, and can connect up to an 8K display.

An Upgrade of Orange Pi 5

The Orange Pi 5B adds wireless communication Wi-Fi  6 and BT 5.0 to provide a stronger and more stable signal and faster network transmission Wi-Fi supports 2T2R 802.11 ax/ac/a/b/g/n, uses two frequency bands of 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and has MIMO standard. Wi-Fi uses two antennas, one of which is shared with BT and uses a PCIe 2.1 interface; BT5.0 uses the UART/PCM interface 128GB eMMC memory is also added to provide more stable and reliable long-time performance to Orange Pi 5B.

Features

Processor: Rockchip-RK3588S 8-core 64-bit processors with Orange Pi OS which doubles the performance.

Numerous Interfaces Easy to Expand: Orange Pi 5B Single Board Computer has many interfaces, such as HDMI output, Type-C, USB3.0, USB2.0, RJ45 gigabit network interface, TF card socket, 3.5mm headphone jack, MIPI LCD interface, MIPI Camera interface, multi-functional 26 Pin expansion interface, etc.

Software: The Orange Pi 5B is compatible with the Orangepi OS, which was created by Orange Pi and is also supported by Android 12, Debian 11, Ubuntu 22.04, and Ubuntu 20.04. Users can run Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Telegram, and other apps smoothly after installing Aurora Store.

Maximum Support 8K@60fps:  Images can be rendered in 8K high-definition thanks to powerful video encoding and decoding. This makes images clearer and more detailed.

Multi-Channel Input and Output: It can send 8K video over HDMI 2.1, USB-C (DP1.4), and dual MIPI D-PHY. It can have more than one screen with different displays, and it can take three MIPI interface camera inputs.

As an owner and user of an Orange Pi 5plus (the rk3588 vs. Rk3588s on opi5b) I can say it has been the most impressive pi type SBC under $300 I have used.
My first attraction was for a.i. purposes.
The Rknn toolset for the built in NPU is used in various other rockchip CPUs like rk3566 & mcu/cpu/npu like the rv1103 and other rv110… chips.
It probably is most likely to be the chipset with most open development in the niches as well. The sheer number of devices not just SBCs put out with these chipsets is much of a market.

As for power, its no doubt more powerful then any raspberry pi to date.
When researching SBCs and proto boards , chipsets like snapdragon have little to no options. Yes the snapdragon 888 is about 2x more powerful 3x more TOPS npu, but the proprietary dominated development of those cell phone chips makes them unavailble or hindered greatly for any real development of software.
That said, Orange pi 5plus and the radxa version are probably the best options for power and a rich opensource development communities using rockchip and rknn.
The model Orange pi 5 and Orange Pi 5B offer all the same power but reduced options like no HDMI in only out. With or without wifi bt or onboard emmc etc..
The plus model uses a detachable emmc module and 2 pcie (an e key plus m key. Model 5B offers 1).

I do use raspberry Pi 4s but since owning an Orange Pi 5 Plus 16gb RAM.. the raspberry 5 seems pointless.
I have ran LLMs with great speed using the rknn chipet.
Unlike the Rpi5, I didnt need to buy an pcie addon, nor a google coral or other pcie TPU module.
If I did the price of that raspberry pi 5 8gb would get pretty close to a nice opi5x 16gb.
I paid under $150 for an Opi5plus 16g. With 256gb emmc and ps.
A pi 5 plus the a.i. kit (module pcie board , rpi5 4gb) will run you that.

To conclude, The rk3588, whatever board you choose, has been a turning point for the SBC pi Niche. Although rpi overall popularity still reigns supreme and rightfully so for their ease for noobs , support and self educators, the most powerful chipset in popularity with alot of support has turned from Broadcom allwinner and amlogic to rockchip.
