VisionFive 2 – open source quad-core RISC-V dev board

High-performance quad-core RISC-V single board computer (SBC) with an integrated 3D GPU, 2G/4G/8G LPDDR

Meet the VisionFive 2

A pioneering development board that combines performance with low-cost and full open-source RISC-V single board computer.

At the core of the VisionFive 2 is The StarFive JH7110 64-bit CPU, featuring quad SiFive U74 1.5GHz cores and comes paired with BXE-4-32 GPU from Imagination Technologies. Our goal was to iron out some of the initial issues with our original design. Whereas the JH7100 had two 64-bit SiFive U74 RISC-V cores running at 1GHz, the JH7110 has four cores running at 1.5GHz.

A larger change from the VisionFive 2’s predecessor is the addition of the Imagination BXE-4-32 graphics processing unit, which will go quite some way into increasing the overall performance for desktop and graphical workloads.

The original VisionFive, unveiled late last year and sold exclusively in 8GB form from March this year, was a strong initial design but not without its troubles: as our testing showed, design flaws in the silicon hampered performance while reliance on an outdated end-of-life operating system — a situation now resolved by Canonical’s recent release of an official Ubuntu Server 22.04.1 image for the board — brought its own difficulties.

StarFive has opened crowdfunding for its second hobbyist-focused RISC-V single-board computer (SBC), the VisionFive 2 — promising a faster device with twice the cores, a GPU, and dual gigabit Ethernet ports.

Designed around the new JH7110, fixing flaws in the original VisionFive, the new VisionFive 2 is available for a lot less money.

Gole1 Pro – Pocket-sized Windows 11 Desktop PC has WiFi 6.0 and a 5.5″ Touchscreen Display

Renowned Chinese PC Manufacturer, HIGOLE; maker of the GOLE 1 mini PC released back in 2016, has released its newest touchscreen mini PC, the GOLE 1 PRO loaded with improved features and capability.

Unlike the GOLE 1 which runs on an Intel Atom x5-Z8300 processor, the GOLE 1 PRO ships with either a dual-core Intel Celeron N4000 or a Quad-core Intel Celeron J4125 processor, both of which, in all ramifications, outperform the performance of the processor on the initial GOLE1.

The GOLE 1 PRO is the world’s smallest touchscreen PC to offer users portability and desktop experience simultaneously as it can be operated with/without a mouse and keyboard thanks to its 5.5-inch display.  The GOLE 1 PRO also features 8GB RAM, 128GB ROM,256GB SD card slot for secondary storage and data transfer along with four USB 3.0 ports and two HDMI 2.0 ports for simultaneous display expansion at up to 4k resolution.

Both versions of the GOLE 1 PRO feature a built-in microphone and speaker for audio function and some difference (asides from the processors) only starts setting in, when you consider their wireless communication features, as the J4125-based device, offers Wifi 6.0 and Bluetooth 5.2,  while the N4000 based GOLE 1 PRO comes with Wifi 5.0 and Bluetooth 5.0. This however takes nothing away from both versions of the device as the communication protocols they support are still very much in vogue and makes GOLE 1 PRO ready for use with all sorts of external devices including projectors, printers, mouse and keyboards, modems, headsets, and speakers, etc., used at home and in the office.

The coolest thing about the GOLE 1 PRO, for me, is the size. It fits into 91.2 x 17.76 x 142mm matte textured metal enclosure which provides it with a built-in radiator plate and doubled layer vent that aids its seamless fanless design for handling processors and other components heat. The enclosure also carries a built-in battery, which according to HIGOLE can power the device for up to 4 hours under average usage conditions, and a type-c port through which the device can be powered/charged with a 12VDC adapter.

Highlight features and specifications of the GOLE 1 Pro are provided below:

GOLE 1 PRO (J4125):

  • Processor:
    • Quad-core Intel Celeron J4125 processor @ 2.0 ~ 2.6 GHz, 10 watt; Intel UHD graphic 60 or

For OS, the GOLE 1 PRO runs Windows 11 Professional out of the box but also supports Ubuntu and some other Linux distros.

The GOLE 1 PRO is currently available via its crowdfunding page on Indiegogo with a start price of $1,638 (HKD).

More information on the PC and Crowdfunding details can be found on the product IndieGoGo Page.

SkyWater and Google will use $15m Funding to expand an open source chip design project

SkyWater Technology has announced that it will be extending its partnership with Alphabet’s Google, releasing an open source Process Design Kit., for its commercial 90nm, fully depleted silicon on insulator (FDSOI), CMOS process technology. This announcement came shortly after the US chip manufacturer received $15 million in funding from the US Department of Defense (DOD).

“Through this important investment from the DOD and collaboration with Google, we will enable open source design for our commercial SKY90-FD process technology, creating an IP [Intellectual Property] pipeline and pathway to commercial volume manufacturing,” says SkyWater CEO, Thomas Sonderman. “This will expand our 90nm foundry offering as a platform for innovation and productization here in the U.S.”

This is not the first time the duo will be partnering on a project like this; they joined forces together about two years ago to enable the open source design of custom application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) on SkyWater’s 130 nm mixed-signal CMOS process node. The results of the project so far have been incredible as about 240 designs from the over 364 community submissions have been manufactured.

Speaking on why the US government decided to invest in the initiative, Thomas Sonderman stated that there’s a lot the government stands to get from the output of the development. The US military will have a new way to procure homemade chips in the future.

“We’re hoping that the collaboration is going to address what are really historical limitations of chip design and production, both for national defense as well as commercial markets, because researchers get improved accessibility and developers get to go through that exploration faster and candidly at lower costs,” said Google Public Sector CEO, Will Grannis.

The new platform is for analog-digital mixed-signal chips that we usually see in smart home products. This kind of chip takes advantage of larger transistors for cheaper production.

The partnership among the three represents a new era in accessible chip design driven by an open source approach. According to Matthew Kay, head of the new open-source silicon program at the Department of Defense,

“investments in commercial endeavors such as the partnership between SkyWalker and Google is another example of how the DOD can leverage technology advancement within the open source community to effectively and efficiently improve its defensive posture for the future.”

SkyWater provides the next-generation chip design system and secure fabrication facilities, Google provides the compute and technical know-how, while the $15 million funding from the Department of Defense makes it all scalable and accessible.

The process design kit, a set of files that describe the building blocks of the project, is open source but the fabrication process itself isn’t. Other useful details on this announcement are available on SkyWalker’s page and Google OpenSource Blog.
