Teledyne LeCroy WaveSurfer 4000HD High Performance 4-channel 12-bit Oscilloscopes

The fast Windows CE-based WaveSurfer 4000HD systems with solid-state drives make the world’s highest definition oscilloscopes even more economical, powerful and productive with an efficient and intuitive user interface.

Saelig Co. Inc. has introduced the Teledyne LeCroy WaveSurfer 4000HD range of high performance 4-channel digital oscilloscopes, with 12-bit vertical resolution based on Teledyne LeCroy’s HD4096 high definition technology.  Four models are available with bandwidths from 200MHz up to 1GHz.  This compact form-factor instrument features a large 12.1” multi-touch display for fast setup and operation.   With a screen refresh rate of 175,000 wfm/sec, the WaveSurfer 4000HD samples at  5GSa/s for two-channel operation and 2.5GSa/s when sampling all four channels. With 12.5Mpts/ch (4-ch) and 25Mpts (2-ch) this makes it possible to maintain a high sampling rate over a long period of time, providing a better tool for finding rogue waveforms.

Teledyne LeCroy WaveSurfer 4000HD high definition 12-bit oscilloscopes with HD4096 technology have higher resolution than conventional 8-bit oscilloscopes (4096 vs. 256 vertical levels). 12-bit ADCs with high sample rates, combined with high signal-to-noise amplifiers, and a low noise system architecture to 1GHz enables the capture and display of signals with 16 times more resolution than other oscilloscopes. Waveforms captured and displayed are cleaner and crisper. Signal details that are often lost in the noise on other oscilloscopes are clearly visible and easy to distinguish with HD4096-based oscilloscopes. Additionally, the 4000HD’s 16-bit offset DAC permits ±10 V offset at 20 mV/div, ±4 V at 5 mV/div, and an amazing ±1.6 V offset at the highest sensitivity (1 mV/div). Such large applied offsets, combined with 12-bit resolution, makes it easy to acquire and view small signal variations (e.g. ripple, noise, transient interference) on DC or sensor signals. This also provides extended offset ranges for many of Teledyne LeCroy’s high voltage probes.

The WaveSurfer 4000HD’s MAUI with OneTouch interface for its 12.1” touch-screen display means that all common operations can be performed with a single touch.  This puts all the power and capabilities of the oscilloscope at a fingerstroke. Drag, drop and flick gestures provide unsurpassed efficiency in oscilloscope operation.   All the common Automotive and Embedded serial standards are supported with the WaveSurfer 4000HD’s extensive serial data tools, which provide high performance triggers and decodes.  The scope series also features a 4-digit digital voltmeter and a 5-digit frequency counter, both of which work with any channel; measurements update even when system is not triggering. Teledyne LeCroy’s versatile LabNotebook feature stores all setups, waveforms, and screen images in a single LabNotebook file, to which may be added descriptive notes or screen image markups.

The optional 16-channel Logic Analysis package allows sophisticated mixed-signal capabilities to simultaneously view, measure, and analyze 4 analog and 16 digital channels. This enables triggering on protocol elements or specific data patterns using powerful conditional data triggering.

For frequency domain work, the optional built-in Spectrum Analyzer mode offers authentic “spectrum analyzer style” controls and can automatically identify and mark peak frequencies, fundamental frequencies, and harmonics, making frequency data easy to measure with reference and delta markers.  A built-in Waveform Generator provides frequencies up to 25MHz in a wide variety of waveform types.  Saved real-time oscilloscope waveforms or other signals can be uploaded to generate test or arbitrary waveforms.

Over 30 probes in 9 categories are available to suit a wide range of application areas. Power Rail Analysis is one such task in which the 12-bit resolution and low noise clearly shows small signal details on power rails, while the Spectrum Analyzer can help determine the root causes of high noise events.

The fast Windows CE based WaveSurfer 4000HD systems with solid-state drives make the world’s highest definition oscilloscopes even more powerful and productive with an efficient and intuitive user interface.  They are ideal for debug and troubleshooting of power electronics designs, digital power management or power integrity analysis, automotive electronics systems, and deeply embedded or mechatronic designs.  Bandwidth upgrades can be made to models at any time.

In a world where AI chips are announced on what seems like a daily basis, I believe NVIDIA raised the bar with its Jetson Xavier NX — showing that exceptional performance at small size and low power, together with a consistent and powerful software architecture, is what matters in embedded edge computing.

There’s no Jetson Xavier NX development kit, but since the SoM is pin-compatible with Jetson Nano, so you should be able to reuse/upgrade existing carrier boards. In order to get started quickly, the company invites developers to begin application development using the Jetson AGX Xavier Developer Kit with a software patch emulating Jetson Xavier NX.

The Jetson Xavier NX, which is pin-compatible with Jetson Nano, will be available in March 2020.

NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX SoM will be available in March for $399 to companies looking to create high-volume production edge systems, which reads like it won’t sell to individuals like makers or students. More details may be found in the product page.

The board is apparently sold as a video and/or audio streamer storing files in USB storage or MicroSD card to be played on your phone. Up to 8 phones are supported for photo sharing, and 3 phones for simultaneous video streaming.

HLK-7688A bottom

One of the photos of the board shows it supports OpenWrt 3.10 with Linux 2.6.36 SDK. It’s probably a mistake, as when I tested the MediaTek LinkIt board two years ago, it ran Linux 3.18.21, OpenWrt Chaos Calmet 15.05+.

One buyer also mentions USB audio works just fine with Linkit firmware, and the latest version of OpenWrt can run on the board but without I2S nor I2C support. He later updated his comment with further details:

Openwrt driver support is left at v15 and even this version 15 is full of bugs. I2S is “mission impossible” andI could not get sound out of that board

If despite the software shortcomings, you’re still interested in the board, it can be purchased for $16.70 with WiFi antenna on Aliexpress, or alternatively you could get the module only for $10 shipped from the same link.

As a side note, while looking for other HLK-7688A boards on Aliexpress, I came across one with 5 Ethernet ports since the processor supports this.
