This 3-Phase Brushless Motor Driver features the FAN73893 3-Phase Half-Bridge Gate Driver and 6XFDB047N10 MOSFET, delivering a compact design that supports currents up to 5A and operates within a power supply range of 12V to 60V DC. The board is equipped with a screw terminal connector for effortless connection of the motor and motor power, as well as a header connector for connecting input signals and logic gate driver power supply. The input signals are compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic levels.

The gate driver chip incorporates overcurrent protection features, including a default overcurrent threshold of 10A, which can be adjusted using a shunt resistor. The overcurrent detection is triggered when the voltage across the shunt resistor exceeds 500mV. In the event of an overcurrent fault, the fault clear time is set to 2ms using a 2.2nF capacitor (C7). This ensures the motor driver’s reliable and efficient operation. The project requires 6 PWM signals. Arduino or any other microcontroller can be used to control this board.

Note 1: The project is designed to drive a brushless motor up to 60V DC, but it can be modified to support a supply voltage of up to 100V with a few adjustments, including upgrading the bus capacitor voltage rating, MOSFETs that supports 100V.
Note 2: The project can be configured to accommodate higher voltage motors up to 400V DC by replacing the MOSFETs with IGBTs, adjusting the bootstrap capacitor value according to the operating frequency, upgrading the DC bus capacitors’ voltage rating, and selecting a suitable shunt resistor for the required current sense. It is recommended to consult the datasheet of the gate driver chip for configuration guidance to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Protection Function

Fault Out (FO) and Under−Voltage Lockout The high− and low−side drivers include Under−Voltage Lockout (UVLO) protection circuitry that monitors the supply voltage for VDD and VBS independently. It can be designed to prevent malfunction when VDD and VBS are lower than the specified threshold voltage. The UVLO hysteresis prevents chattering during power−supply transitions. Moreover, the fault signal (power supply voltage FO) goes to LOW state to operate reliability during power-on events when the power supply (VDD) is below the under−voltage lockout high threshold voltage for the circuit (during t1~t2). The UVLO circuit is not otherwise activated; as shown in Figure 38. If VDD is lower than 3.5 V, the fault signal cannot be driven to LOW state because VDD is not enough to drive the internal circuit.

The FAN73893 is a monolithic three-phase half-bridge gate-drive IC designed for high-voltage, high-speed, driving MOSFETs and IGBTs operating up to +600 V. ON Semiconductor’s high-voltage process and common-mode noise-cancelling technique provide stable operation of high-side drivers under high-dVs/dt noise circumstances. An advanced level-shift circuit allows high-side gate driver operation up to VS = -9.8 V (typical) for VBS =15 V. The protection functions include under-voltage lockout, inter-lock function, and inverter over-current trip with an automatic fault-clear function. Over-current protection that terminates all six outputs can be derived from an external current-sense resistor. An open-drain fault signal is provided to indicate that an over-current or under-voltage shutdown has occurred. The UVLO circuits prevent malfunction when VDD and VBS are lower than the threshold voltage. Output drivers typically source and sink 350 mA and 650 mA, respectively; which is suitable for three-phase half-bridge applications in motor drive systems.
