The Radxa ROCK 5 B+ is an upgraded extension to the ROCK 5B series. It features Rockchip RK3588 with an onboard eMMC which can extend up to 128GB, and LPDDR5 RAM which supports 32 GB of data. With its NPU and an 8K video decoding capability, this board is intended to enhance AI projects.

Radxa ROCK 5 B+ has high-performance processing for AI applications

Radxa ROCK 5 B+ uses the Rockchip RK3588 SoC with a Quad-core Cortex-A76 and a Quad-core Cortex-A55 CPU. It also comprises of a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that handles up to 6 TOPS, suitable for AI/ML applications. Meanwhile, the Mali-G610 MC4 GPU provides strong graphics for 3D tasks and video processing. Plus, it has a 2D image accelerator. The ROCK 5 B+ supports 8K video encoding and decoding. And with H.265 / H.264 / AV1 / AVS2 multi-video decoders, it can handle 8K video at 60fps.

Radxa ROCK 5 B+ is capable of providing 4 display outputs simultaneously, the board can be a good option for complex visual setups, due to its multi-display capability. For storage, it has an onboard eMMC module (up to 128GB) and a microSD card slot. Amongst its wireless interfaces, the SBC includes Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 and an M.2 M key connector each with PCIe 3.0 2-lane, SIM card slot for cellular support. It also has 1x 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports for wired networking. There are 3 UART interfaces and 40 GPIO pins for connecting devices and sensors. It supports various data types like INT4, INT8, INT16, FP16, BF16, and TF32 (TensorFloat-32). Additionally, there’s also 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 OTG ports, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 HOST Port and a Full-function USB Type-C port.

Radxa ROCK 5 B+-An improvement in the ROCK 5 series

The Radxa ROCK 5 B+ SBC is the latest addition to the ROCK 5B series. While ROCK 5B have LPDDR4 RAM, ROCK B+ has LPDDR5 RAM. LPDDR5 supports higher data rates and large device sizes at low operating voltages compared to LPDDR4. ROCK 5B has a micro HDMI connector whereas the ROCK 5B+ has a full-size HDMI connector. Our Previously reviewed Radxa ROCK 2A and ROCK 2F consist of Rockchip 3528A while ROCK 5B+ has the Rockchip RK3588. Note that the ROCK 5A lacks an NPU  that the ROCK 5B+ includes making it suitable for face recognition, voice recognition, and instant visual translation and can be used in projects such as edge computing, smart cities, AI projects, home automation, security systems and IoT projects While the ROCK 5A supports eMMC of 16GB or 32GB the ROCK 5B+ supports eMMC of 128GB. ROCK 5A can decode a video at 4K while ROCK 5B+ can decode a video at 8K with 60 frames per second, hence it can be more suitable for signboard translation and dash cams used in cars, which require dynamic readability.

In summary, the Radxa ROCK 5 B+ is a versatile and flexible SBC. Whether you’re working on AI projects, multimedia tasks, or IoT solutions, the ROCK 5 B+ provides the power and flexibility needed to turn complex ideas into reality.
